Can this be too real to be true? An app that makes you money?!
You may be familiar with the capability to "check-in" at various businesses through social media platforms, such as Facebook or FourSquare. But you may be less familiar with the opportunity to make money doing it.
WeReward was an app that was founded by Ted Murphy and launched in May 2010. The premise of the organization was that users could "check-in" at certain locations and earn points, which would translate into cash. Murphy explained, "WeReward is an application that basically allows you to earn money for doing things in the real world. You could get a free lunch. You could get free products."
There were a variety of things that an individual could do to earn points, and each activity would be worth different amounts. Activities ranges from "checking in", to taking a picture of your sales receipt, referring a friend and any number of things in between.
For example, in June 2010 there was a 500 point reward for the first 500 people to post a picture of themselves drinking a Starbucks beverage inside any of the nation-wide locations. Each point valued at roughly a penny, making this 500 point promotion a $5.00 payday for each participant.
It is important to note that not all point rewards are as high as 500. Some are as low as 10 or 25 points. However, the smaller rewards was not a discouragement to users. One such user, Mario Ricciardelli, stated that he got $25 back for "not doing a lot of work". Another individual tested the app, not sure if it would be worth her time. She concluded, "From just doing what I would normally do, I earned 235 points, or $2.35". While it may not sound like much, the amounts quickly added up. And once an individual earned 1,000 points, they were able to send it to Paypal to receive their cash prize.
Does this sound too good to be true? Well, it just might be.
A great deal of information from 2010 and 2011 can be found on the organization, but not much is available since that time. Their website, http://wereward.com is not active. The app is no longer available- At least this is what the author found while doing a search from her Android.
Where has the WeReward app gone? And what caused it to end?

I'm so sad that people and businesses aren't using this app! I think it's an excellent idea and marketing strategy. I bet that people just didn't care enough to use it, it would be a lot of effort. Great post!
